Obituary of Elizabeth Hyland

Elizabeth Hyland, 86 of Washington, NJ, passed away peacefully at her home December 29, 2016. Elizabeth, also known as Auntie Betty by many of her loved ones far and near, was born in Dublin, Ireland on January 12, 1930, to the late John Hyland and Elizabeth (Campbell) Hyland. She was one of seven siblings; Paddy, Peter, Jackie, Leo, Robert & Kitty. She immigrated to America in 1949 to join The Sisters of Our Lady of Charity. She remained in the convent until 1974. Elizabeth moved to New Jersey and remained strong in her beloved Catholic faith. She was a devoted parishioner in the St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church in Hampton, NJ for 42 years. After settling in NJ with friends, she began working at the Hunterdon Developmental Center in Clinton. After 23 years of service, moving up through the ranks, she retired in 1998 as the housekeeping supervisor. In retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at the Hunterdon Medical Center's mail room, giving to charity, spending time with family and friends. Lunches with her closest friends were some of her most cherished times. She is survived by family abroad and her beloved friends that became family here in the United States. She is also survived by many friends who were blessed by her friendship. A wake will be held 1/4/17 at DeVoe Funeral Service 136 West Washington Ave Washington NJ in from 9:30 - 10:30. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ann's Church in Hampton at 11am. Interment to follow in the Parish Cemetery. The DeVoe Funeral Service has been entrusted with her arrangements.
