Ruth Hockenbury

Obituary of Ruth Joan Hockenbury

Ruth Joan Hockenbury, 88, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2025, at her home in Hampton, New Jersey, surrounded by her beloved family. Born on July 12, 1936, in Kingwood Township, NJ, she was the cherished daughter of the late Theodore and Georgina Rounsaville. Ruth spent her early years on the Wescott Farm, now part of the Spruce Run Reservoir, a place she held dear to her heart.

Ruth graduated from North Hunterdon Regional High School in 1954. Shortly thereafter, on December 22, 1954, she married the love of her life, Bernard Hockenbury, in High Bridge, NJ. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised three children: Roger, Warren, and Brenda, in Hampton, NJ.

Before starting her family, Ruth worked as a bookkeeper, first at a real estate office in Clinton and later at Agway in Flemington. However, her greatest joy came from being a devoted wife and mother, dedicating her life to raising her children and nurturing her family.

Ruth and Bernard shared a love for adventure, spending countless summers traveling across the United States with their camper. These journeys created cherished memories and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the country. Ruth had a passion for country music, especially the classics, and found joy in crocheting, knitting, and solving crossword puzzles. She also loved watching game shows, which brought light-hearted entertainment to her days.

A devout Christian, Ruth was a dedicated parishioner at the Church of God International Community in Allentown, PA. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, and she found great comfort and strength in her spiritual beliefs.

Ruth’s  legacy is one of love, devotion, and faith. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 70 years Bernard Hockenbury, her children Roger Hockenbury and his wife Hilee, Warren Hockenbury and his wife Donna, and Brenda Hockenbury. Ruth is also survived by her sister June “Dolly” Fritsche and her husband Fred, brother George Rounsaville and his wife Betty, brother Jim Rounsaville and his wife Pam, and by 11 Grandchilren, 4 Great-Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, as well as in the stories of her life well-lived.

Ruth is predeceased by her parents Theodore and Georgina Rounsaville, and by two brothers Fred Rounsaville and Theodore “Rich” Rounsaville.

At this time Cremation is being held privately and Ruth will be laid to rest at Spruce Run Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers it is the request of the family that donations be made to the Church of God International Community at PO Box 91150, Pasadena, California 91109.
