Obituary of David Russell Garhart
David Russell Garhart, 75, of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, passed away March 25, 2026 in Hackettstown, NJ. Born on May 1, 1950, in Hornell, New York, David was the son of the late Cyrus M. Garhart Jr. and Nancy (Harvey) Garhart.
David proudly served his country in the United States Navy from June 2, 1970, to January 6, 1972. Following his military service, he built a career as a self-employed painter, operating Garhart Painting in Phillipsburg for many years. He was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and pride in his craft.
David was a longtime member of the Washington Township Senior Citizens and the Phillipsburg AARP. He had a deep love for music and enjoyed attending concerts, singing, and playing guitar. In his free time, he found joy in fishing, playing golf, and cheering on his favorite team, the New York Mets. He especially cherished traveling and spending time with his loving companion of 15 years, Diane Cameron.
David was also known for his love of cooking and was particularly proud of his blackened catfish, which he enjoyed preparing for family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Y. Garhart, who passed away in the late 1990s.
David is survived by his devoted companion, Diane Cameron of Phillipsburg, NJ; his brother, John Garhart and his wife Ellen; his sister, Patricia Butynski and her husband Larry; 4 nephews; 2 great nephews, as well as extended family and many friends.
